What Research Says About Sleep
We start by looking at some recent research carried out on the effects of sleep or rather the lack of sleep. Recent research conducted by scientists to find out what effect the lack of sleep does to your body show some rather surprising results. This is enough for everyone to jump
into bed and catch up on sleep.
Recent research showed that sleeping less than five hours each night was equivalent to having a blood alcohol level of 0.1. The legal limit of blood alcohol over which you cannot legally drive is 0.08. This is how harmful lack of sleep can be for us, it renders us unable to drive, work and generally function normally.
Another recent research conducted on sleep in the US showed that middle school students who went into school at 8.30 am rather than 7.30 am were able to score higher in school tests – 2 percentile higher in their maths tests and a percentile higher in their reading tests. This shows
the benefits of allowing students to come in a little later in order to improve their ability to absorb information and score better in school tests. Another example of the effect of lack of sleep on productivity is our attention to detail declines as our sleeping hours go down.
Surgeons found themselves making 20-32% more mistakes when they didn’t have a proper night’s sleep. Athletes are also prone to perform better with a good night’s sleep. Another negative side-effect of lack of sleep is one we may all have suffered at some stage – headache and migraines.
Although we aren’t exactly sure what the connection between sleep and headaches and migraines is. So sleep will help prevent you feeling like a bear with a sore head in the morning. Lack of sleep brings in a whole slew of health problems. In order to keep the doctor away try and get some proper shut eye. Lack of sleep can cause anxiety, depression, tension, a spike in blood pressure, hypertension and a risk of a heart attacks and strokes.
It’s no wonder that a number of companies now allow a midday nap for their employees. Work places are beginning to understand the value of a short nap. In fact,
in China, some companies set aside some time in the afternoon for a short nap when the lights are dimmed and people put their heads down on their desk and get some shut eye or some time to recharge themselves.
